Cardinal Dolan Celebrates the SIS Mass of the Holy Spirit to Begin the Academic Year

September 18, 2024

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, the SIS community gathered at the Corpus Christi Monastery to celebrate the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, a tradition in Jesuit schools that marks the beginning of the academic year. The event was honored by the presence of His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York as the Principal Celebrant. Cardinal Dolan was joined by concelebrants from the Society of Jesus, including Fr. James Ferus, SJ (SIS Trustee and VP of Ignatian Identity and Formation at Regis High School), Fr. Zach Presutti, SJ (Founder of Thrive for Life USA), and our very own Fr. Vincent Marchionni, SJ, SIS Dean of Students and Director of Admissions and Community Engagement.

Rich Darrell, Head of School, described the morning as “nothing short of extraordinary as our students displayed wonderful enthusiasm during the mass and throughout His Eminence’s visit to SIS afterward.”

We were also thrilled to welcome over 30 benefactors and Catholic school leaders who joined our students and families in welcoming Cardinal Dolan, marking the first visit to SIS from the Archbishop of New York. His Eminence participated in a student-led tour of SIS after the Mass and was visibly moved by the students, parents, faculty, and supporters of SIS.
