Library/Test Prep

"Go forth and set the world on fire."
library

In order to instill a love of reading and to prepare our students for future high school admissions tests, Saint Ignatius School requires the students spend time each day in the library dedicated to silent reading and test prep.

Our on-site library collection includes a wide variety of high-interest Young Adult (“YA”) books in both nonfiction and fiction; and a range of additional reference books (atlases, almanacs, dictionaries, thesauruses, etc.). These books are made available for use both at home and at school by teachers and students alike. We also maximize time spent in the library by preparing students to excel on upcoming state and high school entrance exams.

Each school day, a full period is dedicated to the use of our newly renovated library at Saint Ignatius School. This period is divided into two segments; silent reading and test prep. For silent reading, students are tested at the start of the school year and invited to check out books at their respective Instructional Reading Level (“IRL”). Following the completion of each book read, students take a computer generated test measuring general comprehension, work knowledge and skills, knowledge of author’s craft and analysis of text. Computer generated scores provide feedback that indicate how well a student is performing relative to their peers nationwide. Results provide parameters for future book selections as well.

The Library period is also dedicated to preparing students for upcoming high school admissions tests, Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS), and the NYS Common Core ELA and Math assessments.
